Schedule Change

The Skis, Not Skirts gathering originally scheduled for this Sunday, Feb 8 has been rescheduled for 11am at Skyway on Saturday, Feb 7. We'll work on skate technique and do some more video work.

This schedule change is to avoid conflicting with the Heart Throb informal ski marathon.

email grandmesanordic@gmail.com for more info.

Hope to see you there!

Great Day to Classic!

We had great tracks, nice snow and blue kick wax conditions for our classic outing today.

We worked on falling forward on our poles to increase double poling power, sashaying our hips for a more effective stride and kicking our feet forward from the hips as if kicking a soccer ball to produce a solid forward stride.

Video below:

Look for us at the Grand Mesa Classic Race on Jan 25.

Brrrrrr!

Today was a cold day for skiing today (about 1F at 11am) but that didn't stop us. We worked on poling technique and learned how to get more power out of each pole plant.

Despite the cold, I managed to take a few videos. Unfortunately, I tilted the camera sideways to snap them and haven't figured out how to rotate the video on my computer or on blogger. Argh!

Next time I'll keep the camera upright. In the meantime, here are the sideways videos...

Sunshine and Smiles

Skis, Not Skirts kicked off in style today with a lively group of six skiers.

Ruthie provided the entertainment with a recounting of her previous day's adventure finishing the Winterstart classic race with just a single pole. We're still not exactly sure how she managed to lose the other one during the race, but we gave her an A+ for effort.

Annie won the gold star of the day for her unbelievable transformation into a skating goddess after a single technique drill. (Keep your hip over your ski when you transfer from one ski to the other. It really was that easy!)

But all of us made big improvements. And S, if you're reading this, thanks for your (inadvertent) technique tip! We hope you'll join us next time (Sunday 12/21, 11am at Skyway).

Homework for next time: ski, ski, ski!

What is Skis, Not Skirts?

Skis, Not Skirts is a women’s ski group dedicated to getting fit, improving ski technique and having fun. Women of all ages and abilities are welcome, but you'll have more fun with us if you have been out on skis a few times prior to your first session.

Most of our members are advanced beginners and beyond. What does that mean? The ability to ski a few kilometers without stopping. You don't need to be fit or graceful to attend (but expect to acquire those qualities along the way).

Each session will consist of a training/technique clinic, followed by a group ski, and ending with a BYO picnic/tea party social at the Skyway trailhead.

If you're a first-timer or newbie, give the GMNC's new adult lessons a try. You can still meet up with our group for an apres ski gathering at the Skyway parking lot afterward. (And the lessons are open to all genders, so your spouse won't feel left out!)

Skirts supports the GMNC. Suggested donation is $10 per session for members, $15 for non-members--proceeds support the GMNC. Send your donations to: Skirts, c/0 GMNC P.O. Box 266, Cory, CO 81414. Make your check payable to GMNC.
